Are you looking for a way to spruce up the exterior of your house, but not really in the market to paint your entire home? Consider painting your front door! It’s an easy way to a splash of color and give your house a new look without breaking the bank.
But choosing just the right color and shade can be difficult. Are you willing to make a bold statement with a bright color? Are you looking to just add a pop of color without going crazy and getting the neighbors worried? Your choice can be driven by your homes exterior color or design, or you can choose to go with your favorite color. Here are a couple of ideas when considering a new color for your front door. Despite the boldness of red, has been the color of front doors for ages. It is a traditional color that gives a sense of “welcome” to use on just about any design of home. It adds a splash of color without stepping too far out of the box. What can set you apart from others with the red door is the shade you choose. You can go with a deep red, a bright candy apple red, or even hues of deep coral. Red also goes with almost any exterior paint combination including beiges, browns, greys, greens, blues and white.
Why not greet your guests with a cheery yellow door! The color yellow is one that exudes happiness and warmth. A perfect impression on anyone walking by your home. While some of you are bold enough to go with a bright daffodil yellow, there are other options for those of you not quite ready to take that leap. There is buttercup yellow if you have a soft gray exterior. Or you can go deeper with a marigold or mustard shade of yellow for a bigger impact.
There are so many options with blue. You can choose to go dark with a navy blue on a neutral or white exterior. Or you can go with a robin’s egg or teal blue with a grey exterior. Turquoise, cerulean and powder blue are still other options. If you have a darker color exterior you may want to stick with a lighter color on the door for contrast.
Like the other colors mentioned, there is a shade of green for just about everyone. From bright lime green, to yellow-green, to a deep hunter green, or any of the shades in between there is surely one that will coordinate with the current exterior color of your home. If you have a brick exterior, a green front door can be the perfect accent as red and green complement each other on the color wheel! Various shades of gray are also popular. A bright apple green or even a light grass green would really draw attention to your front door. The green you choose will also make the greenery in your landscape pop!
Of course, black is another traditional favorite for any style of home. It can serve as a neutral, or as an elegant accent. A black door can be an anchor to a façade with multiple colors and textures, such as brick and stone. If your home is already a dark hue, with a white or light neutral trim, a black door can be warm and welcoming. If black seems a little harsh for your home, you can also choose to tone it back a bit with a deeper gray or brown and still have a stunning door!
Admittedly, orange can be a difficult color to work with. But when done right it can be an amazing eye catcher for your home. In fact, orange is my favorite color and yes, my front door is orange! I paired my Mandrin orange door (Sherwin Williams #6891) with a dark gray exterior (Grizzle Gray SW #7068), white trim and black accents. But there are many other shades of orange that you can use to make your house unique. Orange can also be a good match for neutral beiges or taupes by choosing a more subtle, warm hue.
Now some people might balk at the thought of a purple door. However, your front door should make a statement and catch the eye of those walking by. The front door is the perfect place to splash a little purple. It pairs well with grays and other neutrals. But purple is not for the faint of heart. In order to make the right statement, you need to choose a bold hue and steer clear of the pastel shades.
The front door of your home is your chance to make a statement. No matter the color you choose, this is the perfect place to show your family’s personality. And don’t forget about your garage doors! Depending on where your garage sits in relation to your front door, a statement color might look greaet on the garage doors as well! We've put together an Ideabook on Houzz with tons of examples.
